Perhaps the first question that comes to mind when see our website’s naam is ‘what is kanavice?’. Let’s help you solve this mystery. Kanaviçe (ca-na-we-ch-e) is a sort of collective word in Turkish for hand crafted fabrics.
We are two sisters, Sermin and Deniz, who started cross stitching at a young age. Over the last couple of years, our love for cross stitching has only increased. Together with our mother Sevgi, we have kept ourselves busy cross stitching towels, aprons and tablecloths and lots of other items for ourselves and to give away as gifts.
Sermin
As a little girl I have always dreamt of becoming a fashion designer. And so I went to college to study become one. During my studies I became more and more familiar with embroidery. My love and appreciation for embroidery grew further during my internship with renowned fashion designer Jan Taminiau. Afterwards I started playing around with sequins, beads and embroidery.
When I started to prepare for my wedding, I picked up cross stitching again. I love using this method to bring a fabric to life and create dimension.
In daily life I am a social worker (went down a different career path in the end) and I’m a mom to a beautiful little girl. These days I stay up late to lots create pretty things I’m eager to share with you.
Deniz
I am completely in my element when I am cross stitching. Honestly, it feels sort of like therapy as well, as you have to completely focus on your stitches and you have to take your mind off of everything else going on. In daily life
I do cross stitching, but I hope to one day get started on embroidery as well. I would also like to develop sewing skills, so I can turn my cross stitch creations into practical items.
Sevgi
In terms of cross stitching, I am a big fan of designer Filiz Türkocağı. She mainly designs Turkish cross stitch patterns. I use her patterns for duvet covers or to have it framed and used as decoration.
I am always on the look out for new types of fabric and yarn to use in my projects. I normally find out about these new products on Instagram, but it can be quite the challenge to find them in real life.
Once I, or my daughters, have finished a cross stitch pattern, I get behind my sewing machine. Then, I turn the pieces into for example baby blankets, baby bibs, duvet covers or kitchen aprons.
