As I mentioned in my previous post, I would like to also tell you about my second ‘Soda Stitch’ cross stitch project; a cross stitched mermaid. I started this second project just before my birthday. Because I had just ordered my birthday cake at Velvet Company with mermaid colors, I immediately thought; that calls for a mermaid cross stitch project!
Soda Stitch mermaid
When I was cross stitching my first Soda Stitch pattern, I had already found the ‘Fairy Tale Land’ patterns. This patterns also had a mermaid (below left in the pattern).
Changing the colors
But I did want to change the colors of the pattern to the colors of Ariel in ‘ the Little Mermaid’. So instead of blue hair, pink bikinitop and a yellow tail I opted for red hair, purple bikinitop and a blue tail. I was thankfully able to find another pattern on which I could base these colors so they would match well.
I used the below colors:
Hair: 347, 351, 352 & 353
Bikinitop: 762 & 3032
Tail: 762 & 3032
I actually also wanted to change the color of her skin, since Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in the live-action Little Mermaid. But because I could not find another pattern to base the dark skin tone colors on and because I was pressed for time, I unfortunately was not able to experiment with different colors. But I was finally able to use a different skin tone in my third Soda Stitch project! You can read more about that here.
Matching the cake
I ordered the ‘Crazy Birthday Cake‘ from Velvet Company and sent them a color palette for the cake. I Googled ‘mermaid pastel colors’ and found the below palette:
Velvet Company then suggested to add some mermaid themed elements to the cake as well, such as shells. I was so happy with their service and them taking this initiative. Of course I took them up on their offer.
And then it was finally time to pick up the cake in the Beemster (such a lovely area). Unfortunately it was a very hot day and the cake spent too much time in the car, so it did start to tilt. But that did not take away that the cake was absolutely beautiful:
I added the ‘thirty’ cake topper myself. And, if I may so myself, I really think it matched well with the cross stitched mermaid.
How do you like the color combination of the mermaid?
