Cross stitch Fairytales

Rapunzel

I mainly do cross stitching but I have been trying to immerse myself into embroidery as well. With embroidery you can create any shape you like on the fabric as you’re not restricted to crosses. You also don’t have to count te fabric, as it’s more ‘free’. Even though the other half of the ‘Kanavice Sisters’ is basically a pro at embroidery (thanks to her education in Fashion), I find myself being more of a novice. So, I need some practice in this area. And I wanted to practice embroidering something I love. You can perhaps already guess it, that means embroidering a Disney themed item. I started off with my favorite Disney princess; Rapunzel.

My embroidery process

I also like to spend some of my free time doing handlettering. Which helps in the design process of an embroidery project. But, I also of course need to take into account that I should design something that isn’t too intricate for me to practice my embroidery on.

Once I finished my design, I copied the design onto fabric. The way I like to do that, is by placing the drawing on top of a tablet or by taking a photo of it with your tablet. The lighting of your tablet will then help by copying it onto your fabric (you’d place the fabric on the screen and then copy it). I use the app ‘Lightbox Trace‘ for this.

I also spent some time watching tutorials by ‘Cutesy Craft‘ on YouTube. She explains the techniques very clearly and makes it so easy to follow. By watching her videos, I decided to add some elements to the design, such as the Lazy Daisy.

I’m planning on continuing to practice my embroidery by doing more simple designs like the Rapunzel one. Of course, it doesn’t always go well. For instance, I had initially made a Cinderella embroidery but I wasn’t entirely happy with the end result. It was a great learning process, however.

What do you think of embroidery vs cross stitch? Any helpful tips would be welcome!
