I have been so incredibly lucky. This past November I spent a week in New York and a week at Disney World in Orlando. Anyone who knows me, knows how obsessed I am with all things Disney. Of course, I often like to combine this obsession with my cross stitching obsession. My favorite new hobby is Disney cross stitching.
Planning
I visited Disney with one of my equally Disney-obsessed friends. We only started planning this trip in the summer. What we didn’t realize until after we booked our flights, is that we were planning our visit in the week of Thanksgiving. Since Thanksgiving is not a holiday here in the Netherlands, we didn’t realize how busy Disney would in this particular week. But this was the only week that worked with both our schedules, and we were sure the magic of Disney would help us cope with the crowds.
Luckily, the crowds were not as large as we had expected. Sure, we had to spend so time waiting in line, but with some proper planning we were able to keep the wait times to a minimum. We had also bought tickets to Micky’s Merry Christmas Party, which ended up being a great decision. Because the Magic Kingdom was only open for the event in the evening, the wait times were down to a minimum and we were able to do our favorite rides. And of course the parade was just magical.
Getting my outfits and cross stitch project in order
The weeks leading up to our Disney trip, I already started living in a Disney bubble. I think I actually always live in Disney bubble. But let’s just say my bubble got intensified.
My first order of business was to find gorgeous yet subtle accessories we could wear in the parks. A few years ago I stumbled upon Disney inspired hair bows which I got for a fairytale themed bachelorette party. I was so excited to get new ones for this trip. Last time I got a Rapunzel inspired bow (she is my favorite!). So this year, I decided to go with Ariel. And I got my friend a Snow White bow. I purchased the bows on Etsy, in Dreamloveandbows’ shop.
And, as you may have expected, I also decided to immerse myself into Disney cross stitching by cross stitching one of the princesses. As you might know, the castle which is featured in the Magic Kingdom, just so happens to be Cinderella’s castle. That certainly helped me pick the cross stitch pattern.
Tweaking the right cross stitch pattern
As usual, I went for the Veronique Enginger pattern. She made a beautiful Cinderella pattern which you can find in her fairytale themed “Fables” pattern book. However, the colors she used in her pattern weren’t the traditional colors for Cinderella. Which is why I decided to play around with the colors. I really wanted my Cinderella to have a blue dress.
I think it’s alway quite difficult to match the colors. To help me pick the right colors, I looked at her other patterns in that same book for which she did use blue colors. This helped me visualize what the combination of colors would look like.
